“I can’t help how I feel.”

These seem to be the 6 words of the modern time. I call BS!!

You and I absolutely can (and DO) control how we feel. Our emotions are 100% based on our thoughts.

Now, not all of these thoughts are conscious. But the attitudes, beliefs, values, and thoughts that we hold are the determining factors for how we feel. In short, our mind controls our heart.

Leaders who are emotionally stable do not fall prey to the victim mentality that says “I can’t control how I feel.” Instead, they take responsibility and control for their minds and force their feelings to follow.

Additionally, they understand that the emotional stability that they exhibit will often be mirrored by their team. Leaders with high EQ almost always start with insight into their own emotional state. After addressing their own mind and emotions, they are able to create an environment that fosters emotional stability for others. Soon the team is functioning at a higher level!

Conversely, if a team is full of dysfunction and drama it is HIGHLY likely that the leader is facilitating a culture of emotional instability by not taking ownership of their own emotions, and fostering an energy that is inconsistent at best.

The idea that we must train our mind is very accurate from both a logical and a biological perspective. The more a thought pattern develops, the more entrenched the synaptic pathways become. This makes it increasingly difficult to find a better way.

If you have spent most of your life allowing feelings to guide the mind instead of the other way around, a type of emotional rehabilitation or training is required. This works in the same way as a muscle which has not been properly used for quite sometime.

Not only must you strengthen the misused muscle but you also have to get the rest of the body, which has been compensating for the unused muscle. Similarly, the mind must be strengthen while the emotions are (at least temporarily) disabled.

Leaders who take proactive initiative in their emotional stability will almost always have more productive and efficient teams. This will improve morale and employee retention while also increasing customer satisfaction!

Can I serve the leaders of your organization by empowering them to become emotionally stable?
