Many people seek out leadership positions for a couple of reasons.
1. To make more money.
2. To have more prestige/authority.
Sometimes, people in these categories also convince themselves that they are also seeking the more ultraistic opportunity to make a greater impact. But all to often the goal is all (or mostly) about the position.
There are two truths that must be acknowledged at this point in the conversation:
1. There is nothing wrong with seeking to earn a leadership position.
2. A formal leadership position is not necessary in order to make an impact.
To the first point, I am not one that believes that all formal leaders are evil. There are many people who are working very hard to move up the ladder of success, and have authentically good motives. I would be remis to assert that those who seek leadership positions, are all bad. In fact there is a proverb that says, “Those who seek the position of leadership seek a good profession.” It is a noble calling to lead others.
BUT, the second point is where the real value lies. The way that one leads BEFORE they achieve a formal position will reveal whether or not they have a pure heart in their desire to lead.
You see, there is no need to wait for a formal position to begin leading. In fact, there is some real evidence to suggest that the most effective leaders are those withOUT formal position!
Why? Because effective leaders are those who understand that they are uniquely positioned to SERVE their team and empower them to succeed! Regardless of the position that is held, effective leaders are those who are serving their team and helping them to reach their full potential. And those who are doing this before they reach of formal position of leadership will often make the best formal leaders because they are leading from a heart of servant-minded leadership.
This is the heart of a leader. This is the calling of leadership. This is the path of legacy!
