You’ve probably seen this leadership quote before. It’s certainly not new.
BUT, have you considered the implications?
As a #leadership consultancy specializing in front-line and middle-management #leaders, we are regularly faced with the RESULT of this quote.
Unfortunately, most of those who have been promoted into front-line leadership positions are given almost no training or empowerment as leaders. 95% of leadership budgets are focused on the executive team (which have decades of experience and almost NO interaction with staff). Meanwhile, team-leads, supervisors, and managers are floundering in a sea of unknown, trying to motivate and manage without having been given the first tools of leadership.
Yes, leadership is all about people! SML Consultive facilitates and trains in the discipline of #ServantMindedLeadership, which places even MORE of an emphasis on #people. But, what tools should we be giving these new leaders to implement this principle?
– Do they know how to effectively engage with different personalities?
– Do they understand how to communicate with dignity?
– Do they recognize the inherent value of those on their team?
– Do the realize how powerful their example is?
There are many more aspects of people-oriented leadership, but just this short list of things that most front-line leaders are NOT empowered to effectively engage, illustrates the reality that leaders are failing–not due to lack of effort, but rather due to lack of proper #empowerment.
And, what are the results? disengaged staff, high employee turnover, disgruntled clients, etc. Something must be done!
