The other day, I had to send 3 hard emails in a row.
While I knew they were the right thing to do, I also knew they were going to be met with strong resistance.

Sure enough, within minutes of sending the second one, I received a call from from one of the recipients, who was visibly unhappy with the message. I took time to listen to what the individual had to share and to understand the questions that they were asking. And I particularly tried to hear their heart and perspective as they shared.

After listening and understanding, I shared my thoughts on the matter and made every effort to answer their questions.

Unfortunately, in the middle of our conversation, I was due to attend a meeting, and had to go. So, as I wrapped up the call, I said to them, “If there is anything that I did not answer, I want to come back to this call. I don’t ever want you to feel like your concerns were ignored or your questions were dodged.”

And I meant it!

Here is the deal. Leadership is not only hard, but it is busy! Taking time to genuinely understand your people is not something that we often feel that we have time for. It is easier to give a platitude or just brush them off. But we are called to a much higher standard. Anyone can use the excuse of “I was busy.” to justify behavior that is uncaring. But real leaders (Servant-Minded Leaders) refuse such temptations and do what it takes to ensure that their people know that they are valued, supported and heard!

Do you have a similar story?
Maybe a time when a leader of yours took time to ensure that you felt valued and appreciated?
I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
