Good Leadership doesn’t happen by accident.
As I am working in a more disciplined way to build SML Consultive, some conversations resonate on a higher level.
For example, I recently made the comment, “If I don’t trust people to do their job, I either hired the wrong person or I need to work on my own heart.”
In my opinion, this is the most challenging aspect of leadership—especially for the entrepreneur!
Last week, we hired our first team member. Andrea has already added tremendous value in her first 4 days and I am thrilled to have her on the team. She joins several others who have been working with me in a more collaborative manner (i.e.: helping in huge ways, but not on the payrole) as we are getting started. The impact of both Victoria (unofficially, SML’s Director of Creative Design) and Josh (unofficially, SML’s CIO) is immeasurable.
But, having a team of people means that SML is now faced with the same challenges as any other organization. Working together as a team requires good leadership. And that does not happen by accident.
We can talk about leading well, trust, communication, delegation, etc. all day long. But, how easily do we live it out? Personally, I find it interesting how many leadership experts do not actually lead a team. This is not to say that they are ignorant of what it takes. I have learned a great deal from those who are blessed with a 3rd party perspective of leadership.
But, it is a different beast, when it is time to put it into practice.
In this post, I am asking us (not just you, but both you and me) what we are going to do differently to be a better leader this week than we were last week?
My answer: I am going to document how I WANT to lead so I have accountability for when I am actively leading.
What about you? What will you do differently, intentionally, disciplined that will give your team the leader that they need and deserve?
