The Inspiring Souls

There has been more than one time in my life when I was called stubborn. I would like to believe that, as I have gotten older (and hopefully wiser), I am less prone to be abstinent for no reason. But, I also recognize the adult version of stubbornness.

Now, when we really want something to happen, there is very little that will convince us that we can’t. In fact, if someone tells us that we CAN’T do something, that usually just motivates us MORE. Of course the opposite is true as well. If we don’t want to do something, then nothing that anyone is going to say is going to make it happen. We are simply not going to try and thus it will not work and “ta-da! told you it wouldn’t work!”

As you know, my heart is to empower leaders, so what does this have to do with those of us in leadership positions? Well, quite simply EVERYTHING!

You see, we leaders have to rise above this tendency. We have to be better than this. And we have to improve on BOTH sides of this equation.

In the event that we REALLY want to do something that the rest of the team is not on board with, we have to lay down our pride, and recognize that nothing we say or do is going to convince them! We are a part of a team for a reason and, if the team has not caught the vision, we can’t force it.

In the event that the team has an idea that we really do not want to do, we must equally not NOT make it about us. We are called to empower at the same level and be just as enthusiastic as if it were our idea! Our position of leadership does NOT give us the right to poo-poo on their ideas–no matter how much we don’t like them. (Of course, if the idea is not in alignment with the mission of the org., then we have to say no. But I am just talking about methodology and preference–not mission deviation.)

So, let’s use our stubbornness for good! Let’s REALY believe that our team is worth fighting for. Then let’s not let anyone (even ourselves) convince us that it can’t be done!
