When I was a child I was petrified of failure! I literally cheated my way through most of Jr. High and High school because it was more important to me to LOOK smart than to risk failure and actually learn. I NEVER tried anything new unless I was convinced that it would be easy for me, in order to avoid the possibility of failure. And, in the rare occasion that I did fail, there is no way I would take responsibility. It was ALWAYS someone or something else’s fault.

It took a significant event in my life in which every possible failure in my life came to light and I was faced with my own character flaws to help me realize that what I was doing was so much more of a failure than the failure that I was avoiding.

You see, failure only occurs when we do not learn. Edison is attributed with the idea that, when asked about his repeated failure in his attempts to create a light bulb, to have said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Although he did not use the word “failure”, Einstein said that we are insane when we do not learn from our choices. “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

As leaders, we are going to “fail”, but it is not really failure–as long as we learn something form it. It is only failure when we allow it to defeat us or when we refuse to grow.

I have made it my mission to empower leaders who are equipped to change the world. This does not mean that they will never face a setback or that they will never see something fail. But it does mean that they will be resilient and press on in their quest. It does mean that they will not allow the disappointments of life to overwhelm them. And it does mean that they will be great–not because they have not failed but rather because failure will not stop them!
