I saw this image the other day and had a couple of thoughts:
1. This is SO incredibly true!
2. This could not have been said by a more appropriate person.
I have both BEEN and MET a number of leaders without a title.
Additionally, I have encountered many in positions of leadership who were certainly not leaders.
Admittedly, some do not care. Some only want the title/pay/prestige/perks/etc. of “leadership”. But, I sincerely doubt that any of those people are reading this post. The people that are likely to be connected with me and in the same groups as me are MUCH more likely to have an authentic desire to be a dynamic and impactful leader.
So, to those of you who want to lead, I want you to know that you do not need a title to do so! Some of the best leaders I know have never held a prestigious title…and yet they have done more good in the world and changed more lives than many of the highest titles combined.
So, if we don’t need a title, what do we need? Simply put, we need LOVE.
I don’t mean mushy or inappropriate love. I mean that we need to have a genuine care for others and a sincere desire to succeed. The person that loves people, leads people.
Let me say that again: The person that loves people, leads people.
There are tons of leadership skills that I get the privilege of teaching every day. These are not unimportant. Leaders need them and if they implement them, they will be better at their job. But, ultimately none of the leadership skills that can be taught are going to replace the single most important part of leadership, and that is love.
That is what makes a Servant-Minded Leader.

P.S.: Simon Sinek is a perfect example…they guy never held a leadership position prior to his success as a leadership coach. He was a marketing expert, who focused on people-centric marketing…look it up! It’s a fascinating story. 😉
