Do you have the #tools you need to succeed?
Do you have the tools your team needs to succeed?
In the world of #leadership and organizational #success, I hear a LOT about “tools for success.”
It’s a catch-phrase, a hot topic, a buzzword. We ALL like the idea of having tools that will help us be successful. Many people are building businesses on the concept, with many LinkedIn profiles beginning with words like, “I provide tools for _(target audience)_ to successfully achieve _(goal)_.”
But, how many of the tools we have are actually helping us be successful? How many of us are trying to use a wrench on a Flathead screw?
Now let’s face it, most of the “tools for success” people talk about are just soft skills that help across the board. So, what does it look like to have great tools that simply don’t work?
This may manifest in a variety of ways, but here’s an example. We may have the “tools” of great books. But, if we are reading the wrong books, then we don’t have the right tool. Or, if we are #reading the right books, but not internalizing the concepts, then we don’t have the right tools.
Every “tool” has a #purpose. Whether it’s a hammer for driving nails, or communication skills for facilitating collaboration, each tool has a purpose that will facilitate success. Assertive #communication is a tool with a purpose. But, when emphatic communication would serve the individual better, it’s the wrong tool. Analytics are powerful as tools. But often, human connection is a better tool in order for success to be achieved.
So, back to the original question:
Do you have the tools you need for success? This won’t look the same for everyone. So, instead of asking, “Do I have the “right” tools?” maybe a better question is, “Are my tools helping me #achieve the success that I seek?”
Then, as leaders, it NEVER ends with us. So we’re faced with another question, Do we have the tools that our team needs to succeed? Again, this will look different from team to team. (In fact, if the answer to this question is a “program” that someone is selling you, I would caution you against spending a ridiculous amount of money on a program that may have worked wonderfully elsewhere but is not strategically effective for you, your situation, or your team.) What we can (and should) do is honestly assess whether our team is being inspired and empowered to achieve the results that they are capable of. What are the right tools that will elevate them further?
What are the right tools for you, today?
Do you have them? What are you willing to do to get them?
Once you do have them, are you willing to put them to use?
