Seriously, what would be different?
I know, I know, we all THINK we are positive…and some of us are. But we are ALL humans, and the reality of the human experience is that, over time we are let down enough that we can easily become jaded.
While there can be value found in learning from experiences that hurt us, and protecting ourselves from being victimized, where I see little/no value is in defaulting to the negative.
We all know people that do this. Everything is going to crumble, no one is going to get it right, it will never work, etc. And, as leaders, if we fall into this trap we become demoralizing to our team.
So, I ask the question, what would our leadership look like if we defaulted to the positive?
What might be different if we:
– assumed that the project WILL be done on time?
– were confident that our team CAN handle the challenge?
– knew that people are doing the best they can with what they have?
Would our leadership look different?
Would our people be more inspired?
Would our teams be more empowered?
Would our productivity increase?
Would we be happier, more pleasant individuals?
I think the answer is YES!
What do you think? Share your stories of defaulting (either positive and how it helped or negative and what you learned) in the comments! I can’t wait to hear from you!
