This is hard to believe…even for we who KNOW it’s true!

A new report issued by The UKG Workforce Institute shows that one’s manager holds the same amount of influence on their mental health as one’s spouse!
This is an incredible statistic that should be enough to motivate employers everywhere to invest in the development of their managers, supervisors, team leads, etc. After all, employees having mental health challenges is not good for ANY part of business.
Good mental health is important for good physical health 💪
Good mental health is important for optimal work performance 📈
Good mental health is important for team-member retention 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧

So, what is the consequence of poor mental health?
Poor mental health = Poor physical health = More sick days 🚑
Poor mental health = Poor work performance = Less output/productivity 📉
Poor mental health = Poor retention = More frustration/worse culture 😭

Obviously, it is important for organizations that their staff be mentally healthy. And, while there is not much that can be done about the impact of one’s spouse (unfortunately), the impact of one’s manager can be addressed 100% of the time!

There has been a lot of time/energy/money that is invested into the development of executive leaders. This is not bad, but it rarely provides the needed impact. The reality is, executives are encumbered by meetings and other high-level responsibilities. Even the best executive is only able to “lead by walking about” a few minutes per week.

However, the middle managers, shift supervisors, and team leaders are spending many hours per day with the staff! And THEY are the ones that are having a HUGE impact on the mental health of the staff! (Even more than one’s therapist, according to the study!)

Despite not having access to this report until recently, SML Consultive saw this in real life in almost every company and is dedicated to helping organization which believe that there is value in empowering their front-line and middle management leaders to effective engage with their teams so that their teams can effectively serve their clients.

We love being a part of the solution! We know that leadership is impactful. Great leadership is needed. And it is great leaders who get to make this world a better place for all of us!
