3. 2. 1. Impact.

What does it mean to make an impact? (seriously…what’s it mean to you?)

I often use the word…in fact, I often talk about “dynamic impact”. But what does that mean?

I don’t know about you, but when I think, I tend to do so in pictures šŸ“· And, when I think of the word impact, honestly the picture is not good. I think of a meteor🌠 or a collisionšŸ’„ I’m sure I’m not the only one. Do you think of similar things?

Not only do I assume that I’m not the only one who has these images in their mind when I think of impact, but I also can’t be the only one who uses the word impact in a positive way… so what does it mean?

Obviously, as with any word, there are two things that give it meaning:
1. Context
2. Shared understanding

The first one is usually the key, but can be thwarted by culture, language, or perception barriers.
Therefore, if we are to have this conversation, #2 is the key…a shared understanding. If you and I have a different perceptions of the word, we will quickly find ourselves to be at an impasse. But, if we can rally around the meaning, then we can really give it power.

In order for me to make the point, here, I would submit that “impact” means that something is forever changed. Whether for good or bad, when something is impacted, it is never again exactly the same. This could be a meteor hitting the earth or a precious child being forever given joy by the kindness of her grandfather. Whatever the case, the being/entity is never again the same. And, if we want to put words like “dynamic” in front of the word impact, I would suggest that we are now in a territory of making a difference that is able to be easily noticed.

What does this have to do with leaders? Great question!

Here is the deal: leaders make an impact on their people 100% of the time!
The ONLY question is: is it good impact or bad?

We leaders carry the weight of impact. That’s right, the responsibility of someone NEVER being the same after encountering us is upon us. We WILL impact those we lead. But, how?

Hopefully this is a useful (or dare I say, “impactful”) reminder of the opportunity that we have to positively impact the lives of those we serve. We must never forget that there is no neutral ground. Impact is being made. It is our responsibility to ensure that it is a positive one!

Let’s be great leaders.
Let’s make a POSITIVE impact.
Let’s change the world!
