The Boss wants to talk with you.
Do you remember the last time your boss came to your workspace and talked with you?
How did you feel afterwards?
Regardless of one’s level of leadership within an organization, there is inherent stress surrounding a conversation with their supervisor. Whether an entry-level employee, who is being addressed by their front-line leader, or a C-suite executive connecting with a client (the true boss), humans will always be a bit “on edge” when they know the supervisor is coming in their direction!
But, when we are the leader, how do we leave our team after these conversations?
If you’ve ever had a “bad” conversation with your supervisor, you are well aware of how it impacts the rest of your day. Morale is lower resulting in collaboration, productivity, and results all being subpar as well.
On the other side, a good conversation can have the opposite impact, leaving you feeling lighter, energized, and willing to take on the world!
So, the question I hope we can all engage is simply this, How do our people feel after our conversations with them? Are they inclined to feel loved, appreciated, and empowered? Or do our comments leave them feeling small, disregarded, and useless?
This is a serious question and it applies to all leaders. But, this is especially valuable for front-line leaders who are regularly engaging with their teams. The way that we communicate will have a HUGE impact on the ability of our team to succeed.
Do you have any stories of how you felt after a leader spoke to you?
What do you do to ensure that you leave your team with a positive impression?
