Are you listening to the people who know the most?

When I saw this image I felt so much validation.

Of course, just because there’s a depiction of something that I’ve said doesn’t make it any more true. But seeing it so cleverly shown was encouraging, nonetheless.

Since I began SML Consultive, I have shared the idea of this post with those I’ve shared my passion with. There is a ton of value in executive leadership development BUT not nearly as much as value as there is in the empowerment of the front line leaders (team leads, in the attached image).

But, there is a second lesson in this post and that is the value of listening to our people! They know what’s happening FAR better than we do (regardless of where we are in the leadership hierarchy) and we do ourselves and the organization a GREAT favor when we invest time into hearing their heart and understanding their perspective—especially before making major changes or pivotal decisions.
(We are proud to partner with VeeMind, to help us hear the hearts of the staff, when assessing the leaders we serve.)

Big picture, this post is calling all leaders to the simple discipline of humility.

It takes a great deal of discipline to honestly believe that our team’s perspective is important and valuable (especially when it is not aligned with our own) and for the executive leaders among us, it requires great humility to understand that we really don’t know what’s going on and our front line leaders are the ones who need dedicated resources and tools for their success because we are not able to provide everything they need.

There’s a message for us all, in this post, today (myself included). Will we take it to heart?
Do you have an experience about this that you’d like to share? I’d love to hear about it!

Let’s be great leaders.
Let’s make a positive impact.
Let’s change the world.
