Are you really the right one for the Job?
#Leaders, have you ever felt like this?
It’s called “imposter syndrome” and it’s more common than we think.
There are two types of leaders that this image represents.
1. The leader who has no idea what they are doing, lets the staff do all of the work and then takes all of the credit. (If you have worked for this type of leader, I don’t need to tell you how damaging this can be to an organization’s #culture and the staff there.)
2. The leader who is trying their best but honestly feels like they are in way over their head! (If this is you, I want to encourage you, today!)
I could “preach” about the first leader I mentioned all day. But, we all know that is a terrible type of leader and none of us want to emulate that (or you probably would not be reading this post).
But, the second type of leader is probably less noticed and is CERTAINLY in need of some #encouragement. Those of us (yes, I include myself in this) who face the reality of our own inadequacies and recognize our challenges are susceptible to something known as imposter syndrome.
#Imposter Syndrome is the state of feeling inadequate to perform the task that one has been given, while simultaneously trying to complete it to the best of one’s ability.
In the accompanying image, it would be the conductor, who has worked hard to be given the opportunity to lead the world’s finest orchestra, but when standing on the podium feels completely overwhelmed by the task before them.
In this scenario, the best (they feel) they can do is try to LOOK like they know what they’re doing and hope for the best. This is often referred to a “fake-it-’til-you-make-it.” And, for good or bad, it is a common practice among leaders who are working their way through the imposter syndrome that they experience on a daily basis.
If you find yourself in this place, I want to take a moment to encourage you.
You ARE adding #value (or you would not have been placed in your position).
You ARE the right person for the job (no one else can do it quite like you)!
You ARE #worthy of #respect (and I’ll bet your team agrees).
You ARE an #inspiration (to all those who are still wishing they could do it as well as you)!
And, what if you really ARE an imposter?
What if your slick resume put you in a position that you are not ready for?
What if you were simply the next person up, and you do not feel #empowered to perform as you are expected to?
What if you are completely overwhelmed by the responsibility you are facing and the conductor represents, not just a feeling of imposter but also a reality of inadequacy?
If this is you, then I challenge you to step up!
BE the leader that us needed.
Learn, grow, and become the person you WANT to see in that position.
Make the most of the opportunity, and show them your value by growing into the role that someone thought you should have 🙂
To all of my fellow-leaders out there that are feeling overwhelmed:
I see you.
I feel you.
I love you!
