Frustrated
Yesterday was a VERY frustrating day.
For the last couple of weeks, I have been experiencing intermittent challenges with both my keyboard and mouse. But, yesterday was on a whole different level.
After receiving, assembling, and installing my new monitor, I was ready for a new day, without some of the issues I had experienced with my previous monitor.
What I did NOT expect was new issues with my mouse, that would make every single task significantly more difficult.
For reasons I could not explain, I found that when using the mouse on screens that displayed on my new monitor, the mouse was about 1/8 of a second behind my movement, and it would “skip” as it moved.
This meant that every move had to be made with careful precision, and I often was clicking on the wrong thing, as the pointer skipped further than I intended it to go.
Needless to say, I was BEYOND frustrated by the end of the day.
Thankfully, I have an EXPERT IT professional in my brother, and he was able to walk me through about 15 different diagnostic exercises until we figured out how to fix the issue.
But, while we were on the phone, he casually asked, “Has it been a long day for you?” It had…in every sense of the word, but I instantly knew that the fact that he could perceive that meant I was treating him differently because of it.
And that is antithetical to leadership!
There are several lessons that we can learn from this. But the one that I want to focus on is the fact that, as leaders, there will absolutely be “long” days, difficult days, challenging situations, etc. That must NEVER impede our ability to effectively engage with our team. We HAVE to keep our emotions in check and remember that our challenges are not theirs…and, in fact, in the event it is necessary, the opposite is true: their challenges ARE ours!
So, that was my lesson, for yesterday. Thankfully my brother helped me learn it BEFORE I began working on a project with my wife. So, hopefully, I was a better representative of Servant-Minded Leadership when we were working together! 🙂
I hope this is helpful to someone today!
