I Will Do this.
This was an unplanned hour in my morning…
Not sure if you’ve ever had your Keurig stop working in the middle of a descaling cycle, but apparently it is a “known problem”.
According to Reddit and YouTube, it’s also known that, while it is possible to fix, taking the appliance apart is “not for the faint of heart.”
Truly, my patience was worn thin more than once during the hour. I quickly abandoned the tutorial video, when I realized their machine was not the same model as mine. And at least once, I debated simply tossing the entire thing in the garbage and simply going out and buying a new one.
But, a combination of fiscal responsibility, and a mindset of “I. WILL. DO. THIS.” resulted in me finding a different way, creating the tool that was needed to reset the thermostat, and being able to enjoy a cup of coffee, this morning.
As I reflected on the experience (reflection = 5 stars), I wonder how often we as leaders go through a similar thought process with our people.
1. View their “malfunction” as an inconvenience instead of an opportunity for mentorship and growth.
2. Become frustrated with them instead of developing new tools and resources that will meet them where they are and help them to function properly.
3. Try to use a general video or other resource that is designed for a different model to fix their “problem”.
4. Consider just firing them and getting a new one instead of doing the vital work of leadership and empowering them to fulfill their purpose.
5. What other lessons can we pull out of this?
Thankfully, my Keurig is not a person, or I would have done a poor job—at least initially—of leading it well. But, I wonder how much of how I engaged with that opportunity is a reflection of things I could improve in my own life?
What about you?
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this if you’re willing to share 🙂
