What does it take to reach the summit of a mountain?

This is Piestawa Peak, in Phoenix, AZ.

I have claimed this deceiving mountain 2x.

Once, I did not make it to the top.

I failed to plan effectively, and FAR overestimated the progress I would be able to make on the fairly steep, rocky and winding trail.

The second time I reached the summit… what was the difference?

1. I had the right people around me. My brother-in-law and I helped keep each other motivated, as we climbed the mountain.

2. I had a better plan. I arrived early in the afternoon, instead of late, and had better shoes and clothes and more water.

3. (This is the most important one) I put one foot in front of the other until we reached the goal!

There are SOOO many lessons in this experience. But, the one that I want to share today is very simple.

We don’t climb a mountain in a single bound.

Similarly, we don’t make an impact with a single act.

Leaders, the way that we can best serve our teams is by consistently serving them. This involves, bringing on the right people (with unique talents and gifts), having an actual plan that allows us to reach our team where they are, and being consistent in our efforts over the long-term.

I won’t keep going. But, I am happy to talk about this with anyone who is interested.
