“What is a ‘front-line leader’?”
This is a common question we’re asked. One person (who didn’t ask) thought we were talking about leaders of first-responder personnel!
We often talk about those we serve as: “Front-line leaders” and “Forgotten leaders.” But what does that mean?
We define “Front-Line Leaders” as those who are actively working with staff. Usually, these leaders have titles like “Team Lead”, “Shift Supervisor”, “Department Manager” and (in some cases) “Division Director”. These are all leaders who would be considered “middle management” or lower in the chain of command and have a team that reports directly to them.
We refer to these leaders as “forgotten” because new employees (usually) receive some training in their new position. And executive leaders often have coaches, and resources to assist them in their role. But too often, the front-line leaders are given nothing more than a pamphlet or some sort of “click-through” training and are expected to just “figure it out!”
Most of these leaders genuinely want to do good work!
Almost all of them want to lead their team well.
But very few of them have been provided with the real-world tools to empower their success. And many times, they are viewed as expendable instead of the future of the organization.
So, when we say we serve the “forgotten” or “front-line” leaders, we mean that we serve the leaders who are doing their best but could use some additional knowledge and training.
We mean that we serve the leader who feels like there is a lot more expectation ON them than tools being given TO them.
We mean that we serve the leaders who are having the biggest impact on the culture of the organization based on how they engage with their staff each day.
We serve the Forgotten leaders who are on the front lines of leadership!
