In my years of #leadership, I’ve noticed a trend among us #leaders. We don’t actually delegate.
Now, before thinking that I don’t know what I’m talking about, let me ask you a question.
How many times, in your career have you had a boss/supervisor who made you their own personal go-fer by “delegating” to you all of the tasks that they don’t want?
Or, maybe you have found yourself in a position where you were “delegated” ALL of the responsibility with NONE of the authority!?!
If you have ever faced this type of “delegation”, then I don’t have to tell you that what you experienced was NOT delegation!! But, if you’re a leader who is exercising this type of leadership then please hear me when I say that delegation is not giving away the tasks we don’t want and it’s not pushing responsibility onto others while we keep the authority.
The servant-minded leader sees the act of delegation as an act of service. It is a way for us to serve our people. Via delegation, we develope the skill, initiative, and responsibility of those who we serve. But it only serves this amazing purpose, IF we do it correctly.
True delegation involves all of what you see in this image, as well as so much more! I hope that this little reminder inspires us to effectively serve our people in this way!
If I can serve you or the leadership of your organization, I’d love to connect with you!
