What is your ‘Challenged’ Instinct?
I’d just received an email that was 100% unexpected and disruptive to my plans. 😠
Despite what I thought was good due diligence to ensure that everyone was on the same page, the email I was reading clearly showed a member of the executive team was NOT tracking and was getting ready to throw a wrench into my carefully planned trajectory for the department I was working with.
Upon reading the message, I immediately set out to convince them of their error and remind them of what they previously agreed to. I had spent about 30 minutes on my response when I realized the agenda I was pursuing was futile and modified my response to a more constructive one.
When you face a challenge, what (or who) is the first thing you try to change? 🤔
If you’re anything like me, the default is to try and change the circumstance or the other person—even though we know better and recognize it is unlikely to be productive.
That’s why reminders such as this are important.
We all face this issue, but those of us who are leaders face it even more regularly.
The way that we engage challenges will have a great deal to do with how effective we are as a leader and (more importantly) how well our team functions.
Recognizing that, even if we have the positional authority to make changes outside of ourselves, there are natural laws that implore us to focus on inward change and personal responsibility is a critical step in the growth of a leader.
Don’t get me wrong, it never gets much easier.
But, the longer we lead, the more important it becomes to effectively implement this important lesson: The only thing we truly have the power to change is ourselves. This is the singular position of power, and give us the best opportunity to make a dynamic impact on the world.
This is just as much a reminder for me as it is for you.
I hope it’s encouraging to you.
But, I cannot control how others feel about it.
All I can do is take it to heart in my personal life and invite you to join me in pondering on its potential value.
I applaud you in your leadership journey. 👏
I respect your determination to keep growing. 😊
And, if this was impactful to you, I would love to hear about your experience with this concept.
